L’American Spirit

Christophe JOUFFRET a une Culture US bien réelle.

niveau professionnel pendant 7 ans.

Ca

a marché.

Action, on tourne

Bien sûr, on va y venir,

Texte en anglais

Christophe JOUFFRET has a real US culture. He knows the United States well having created the subsidiary of Look there in 2007 and, as a triathlete, after having taken part in many events there including the Alcatraz triathlon.

“I joined Cannondale in 1992 after having been a professional triathlete for 7 years. I was competitive and it’s with that state of mind that I introduced myself, more than with my diplomas or English. It worked ! The spirit of competition makes all the difference in American companies. At recruitment level as well as for internal operations, talent and character are promoted rather than pedigree. Above all, that is the American Spirit. The rest follows. That model is different from the French model. That is American pragmatism : engage and start up as soon as the lights are green.

Action, cameras rolling

Innovation is obsessive. Real innovation, where risks are taken by inventing something nobody knows anything about, is characteristic of the US and Cannondale culture. Even if today, since I came back in 2009, the company is larger and the stakes are higher, the spirit stays same. The largest contribution from the US to the cycling world is its social model based on action and creativity. A recent example, at product level, the mountain bike is going through interesting times with the arrival of the large 29” wheels. In the US, progress has been exponential recently. The concept’s dynamic inertia effect is felt as something positive for most people who try our “big wheels” bikes. In France, I have the feeling that anything “new” is by principle seen as suspicious rather than people being enthusiastic about the fact that it simply gives more riding pleasure. Of course, France will get there, but hesitantly. The dynamics will be weaker. Doubt, erected as a thought system, does not lead to the finishing line.

Mass practice and enthusiasm

Triathlon is my sport of reference ; this is also the case for my wife who is organizing the triathlon of Carqueiranne in October for the 3rd year. Here again, the American world has shaped this discipline with the crowd and the entertainment aspects in mind. Today, on the American continent ladies events take place with 3,000 participants. Today, there is a triathlon effect and an increase in popularity of the discipline in France. This meets the personal commitment need of the athletes which goes further than the simple need to practice a sport. In the United States, everything has been done to accompany this wave. In France, Mac Donald had to get involved with the Mac Do Kids Iron Tour to provide “general public” visibility to the practice of youngsters. The Americans are, yet again, the pioneers of a phenomenon which will strongly affect us in the next three years, provided that everyone becomes aware in France that Triathlon is not an isolated phenomenon as I’ve sometimes heard.

Here, we have everything to give the bicycle a new boost

Old Europe should not be envious any longer of the new bicycle world. I spent 8 years with Look and this company gives off vitality and energy to anticipate and innovate which I’m not ready to forget. Triathlon recruits more youngsters today than road cycling. Mountain bike magazines open their columns to the tests of the 29” wheel. Therefore, we can believe. A little American pragmatism and enthusiasm, products ready in the shops and the wheels will keep on turning on both sides of the Atlantic.
