Un autre trip à la mode US. Un melting pot iconoclaste. Des goods
vibrations aquatiques et terrestres. Impensable en Europe où les
“ Chapelles ” des différentes disciplines marquent leurs territoires
culturels à coup de fédérations. Le Tri.
Même si le regroupement de différentes disciplines dans le
cadre d’épreuves classées trouve ses racines bien avant et dans
différents pays, le premier triathlon digne de ce nom se déroula à
Fiesta Island en Californie du Sud, en 1975.
Puis, il y eu la naissance du concept mythique d’Iron Man à Hawaï
en 1977. Un dé- né dans une brasserie d’Honolulu
en Polynésie, où un capitaine de
l’armée US en mal de revanche sur
une équipe de cadets de la marine
qui l’avait battu dans une épreuve
d’athlétisme, eut l’idée de regrouper
en une seule course les 3 épreuves
les plus engagées de l’Archipel en
natation, marathon et cyclisme.
Hawaï était née.
Le Triathlon débarqua en Europe en
1981 avec un point de chute, bien dans
l’esprit “ Tri ” californien, sur la côte
d’Azur, avec l’épreuve de Nice organisée
(dès 1982). Du soleil, des images chocs,
un format cinémascope, la télévision a
trouvé un nouveau “ show ” extrême qui
déchaine les passions et les critiques…
En Europe et tout particulièrement en
France, on ne mélange pas les genres
sans faire sourciller les “ sages ” de
l’administration sportive saine et bien
pensante… Le triathlon avait gagné son
rang de sport aventure en secouant le
cocotier des institutions. Good vibrations
jusque dans les cervelles… Ils ne respectent
rien. Ha les sales gosses ! le bien qu’ils nous
ont fait.

Iron Man or the birth of Triathlon
Another trend in the US ; iconoclastic melting pot : aquatic and terrestrial good vibrations. This is unthinkable in Europe, where the “chapels” of the various disciplines mark their cultural territory with federations. This is Triathlon.
Even if the grouping of the various disciplines for classified events finds its roots well before then and in various countries, the first real triathlon took place on Fiesta Island in Southern California in 1975.
Then, the mythical concept of Iron Man was born in Hawaii in 1977. A challenge born in a Honolulu brewery in Polynesia, where a US army captain wanting revenge over a team of marine cadets who had beaten him in an athletics event had the idea of grouping together into one race the three most physically demanding events on the archipelago in swimming, marathon and cycling. Iron Man was born.
Triathlon landed in Europe in 1981 with a drop point, in keeping with the Californian “Tri” spirit, on the Côte d’Azur, with the Nice event (from 1982). Sun, stunning images, a cinemascope format, TV had found a new extreme show giving rise to passion and criticism.
In Europe, and more particularly in France, you cannot mix genres without making the “wise men” of the healthy and right-thinking sporting administration frown.
Triathlon had reached the rank of adventure sport by getting rid of the deadwood in the institutions. Good vibrations even in the brains. They’ve no respect for anything those little brats ! But look at the good they’ve done to us !
