Charly Mottet ne gagna jamais le Tour de France, mais fut numéro un mondial avec

un casque Bell. Il y croyait, non pas pour l’argent – le sponsoring était alors modeste - mais pour la sécurité.

Un coureur de l’équipe Toshiba vit son accident rapporté dans la presse de deux

manières littéralement opposées. Dans l’Equipe en France : “ le casque ne lui étant

d’aucun secours, il fut transporté à l’hôpital ”. Dans la presse anglaise avec la même photo : “ sauvé par un casque Bell ”. Sans le casque il n’aurait sans doute jamais survécu de son voyage à l’hôpital. Le VTT et le Triathlon furent les deux vecteurs de l’expansion du port du casque de vélo. Finalement quand le papa ou la maman portait le casque, l’enfant suivait tout naturellement.

Charly Mottet never won the Tour de France but was world number one in a Bell helmet. He believed in the helmet, not for money – sponsoring was modest in those days – but for safety.

A rider from the Toshiba team saw his accident described in the press in two completely opposite ways. In l’Equipe in France : “the helmet was of no help and he was taken to hospital”. In the British press, with the same photo : “saved by a Bell helmet”. Without the helmet, he probably would never have survived his trip to hospital. The mountain bike and the Triathlon were the two vectors of the bicycle helmet boom. When the father or mother wore a helmet, the child would naturally follow suit.
